Smokers' Rights
Smokers' Rights is an American political movement which makes the argument that the anti-smoking lobby has been actively lobbying for infringement of American citizens' and business-owners' civil rights. Some Smokers' Rights groups claim that there is a significant amount of evidence that "scientific studies" of the effects of Environmental Tobacco Smoke, also known as secondhand smoke, are flawed, and that smokers' civil rights are being compromised based on this flawed scientific evidence.
Stephen Helfer -vs- Reduced Ignition Propensity (RIP) Cigarettes
Citing various inconsistencies and flaws in the limited scientific research supporting their use, Stephen Helfer has been working against legislation in Massachusetts requiring retailers to sell only RIP cigarettes. He has written multiple letters to editors of major newspapers, lobbied state representatives, and taken out political advertisements in the Harvard Crimson and Boston Globe attacking the prudence of requiring smokers to subject themselves to cigarettes with significantly increased levels of ingredients labeled by public health agencies as carcinogenic.
Mr. Helfer maintains that the only research study used to justify RIP legislation is incomplete, as it surveys only a fraction of the constituent substances in RIP cigarettes labeled carcinogenic, and overlooks their increased toxicity. Helfer has publicly attacked a study, authored by Harvard School of Public Health Associate Professor Gregory Connolly. Subsequently Connolly has declined to respond to substantive criticisms of his studies.
