Smoking ban spurs controversyOSU's tobacco-free policy has caused a debate about its success and necessity.

Summary:
Although it has been almost a year since OSU implemented a tobacco-free policy, smokers, cigarette butts and other forms of tobacco can still be seen on campus.
There are people that continue to use tobacco despite the policy said Seretean Wellness Center Director Robin Purdie. We will have to address that in the near future. I suppose there will always be people that challenge policies and laws, but the reason for rules is to protect everyone.
The campus was officially tobacco-free starting July 1. Purdie said the tobacco-free campus came from a recommendation from the Student Government Association in October 2006. Purdie said the recommendation then went to Faculty Council and Staff Council for their approval.
After all governing bodies gave approval, then-President David Schmidly appointed a task force to study the issue and recommended implementation in the fall of 2007, she said.
